This Saturday, November 15th, marks the 37th anniversary of the Richmond Marathon. America’s Friendliest Marathon brings thousands of runners and supporters to our area. Unfortunately, it also brings those dreaded road closures that make getting to SOJ a little challenging. Don’t worry. We have the answer!
If you live outside the area between Forest Hill Ave and Riverside Drive, you will probably need to alter your normal route to the market. The race will have the westbound lanes of Forest Hill Avenue closed from the area around Forest Hill Park all the way to Hathaway Drive (near Chippenham Parkway) between 8 am and 11:30 am.
The upshot: Boulevard Bridge South, Left onto New Kent Avenue
If you live outside the area between Forest Hill Ave and Riverside Drive, the only way to drive to Forest Hill Park is to cross over the Boulevard Bridge (going South). Even if you live south of the river you will have to cross north over the Willey Bridge or Powhite Bridge and then cross back over the Boulevard Bridge.
From the Willey Bridge…
Cross it (heading North) and turn onto River Road, follow the road as it becomes Cary St. – Make a Right on Sheppard St. – Yield to traffic as you proceed straight onto Blanton Avenue (161 South) – Make a left at the Carillon at Byrd Park and continue across the Boulevard Bridge ($.35 toll) – Make a left at the first stoplight on to New Kent Avenue and follow that straight until you reach the South of the James Farmers Market in Forest Hill Park.
From the Powhite Parkway…
(there is an entrance ramp from the Eastbound side of Forest Hill, which will be open) – Cross north of the river on the Powhite Bridge – Stay to the right when the traffic splits just north of the river – Take the first exit, Maplewood Avenue and get in the left lane marked “To Boulevard 161″ – Continue straight on Maplewood to the Stop Sign at Sheppard Street – Make a right onto Sheppard Street – Yield to traffic as you continue straight onto Blanton Avenue (161 South) – Make a left at the Carillon at Byrd Park and continue South across the Boulevard Bridge (.35 cent toll) – Make a Left at the first stoplight onto New Kent Avenue – Take New Kent Avenue straight until you reach the South of the James Farmers Market.
These detours should only add an additional 10 minutes to your trip. Alternatively, you can park somewhere on the South Side of Forest Hill Avenue and walk about 5 blocks to the market.
**Please remember the speed limit is 25 in this neighborhood. Residents will be out walking with children and pets. Please obey the speed limit.**
We appreciate you making the extra effort to come to the market. Your patronage means even more to our vendors on days like this, and on behalf of them and the entire GrowRVA team, thank you very much for supporting the South of the James Market!
