It’s nearly that time again – time to turn the city into a 26.2 mile track for ‘America’s Friendliest Marathon,’ The Anthem Richmond Marathon to be exact. This event is now in its 36th year, and it continues to provide a positive experience for Richmonders and tourists alike.
But for those of us who are not in runnin’ shape and just want to get around town the way we know best, the marathon can make things…challenging. Don’t be that guy, sitting in your car, stuck in traffic for an hour, regretting the tall latte you polished off 20 minutes ago. Learn the NEW lay of the land and, keep your sanity on Saturday. Fortunately, the geniuses over at RVANews came up with this little gem from last year’s marathon to help us wrap our minds around the road closings:
Getting to SOJ during the Richmond Marathon
If you live outside the area between Forest Hill Ave and Riverside Drive, you will have to take a different approach to get to the market. The race will have the westbound lanes of Forest Hill Avenue closed from the area around Forest Hill Park all the way to Chippenham Parkway between 9 am and 11:30 am , but fear not; we can get you to the market on Saturday!
The upshot is…
If you live outside the area between Forest Hill Ave and Riverside Drive, the only way to drive to Forest Hill Park is to cross over the Boulevard Bridge (going South). Even if you live south of the river you will have to cross north over the Huguenot Bridge or Powhite Bridge and then cross back over the Boulevard Bridge.
If you can get to the Huguenot Bridge…
Cross it (heading North) and proceed down Cary St. – Make a Right on Sheppard St. – Yield to traffic as you proceed straight onto Blanton Avenue (161 South) – Make a left at the Carillon at Byrd Park and continue across the Boulevard Bridge ($.35 toll) – Make a left at the first stoplight on to New Kent Avenue and follow that straight until you reach the South of the James Farmers Market in Forest Hill Park.
If you can get to the Powhite Parkway…
(there is an entrance ramp from the Eastbound side of Forest Hill, which will be open) – Cross north of the river on the Powhite Bridge – Stay to the right when the traffic splits just north of the river – Take the first exit, Maplewood Avenue and get in the left lane marked “To Boulevard 161″ – Continue straight on Maplewood to the Stop Sign at Sheppard Street – Make a right onto Sheppard Street – Yield to traffic as you continue straight onto Blanton Avenue (161 South) – Make a left at the Carillon at Byrd Park and continue South across the Boulevard Bridge (.35 cent toll) – Make a Left at the first stoplight onto New Kent Avenue – Take New Kent Avenue straight until you reach the South of the James Farmers Market.
These detours should only add an additional 10 minutes to your trip. Alternatively, you can park somewhere on the South Side of Forest Hill Avenue and walk about 5 blocks to to the market.
**Please remember the speed limit is 25 in this neighborhood. Residents will be out walking with children and pets. Please obey the speed limit.**
We appreciate you making the extra effort to come to the market. Your patronage means even more to our vendors on days like this, and on behalf of them and the entire GrowRVA team, thank you very much for supporting the South of the James Market!
